Ilie Năstase

Ilie Năstase is a legend of world tennis, recognized as the first leader of the official ATP ranking and one of the most charismatic and spectacular figures in the history of this sport. Also nicknamed “Nasty”, the former great Romanian tennis player stood out for his enormous native talent, elegance in the game and a volcanic temperament. He officially became the first leader of the ATP ranking in August 1973 and won two major singles tournaments: the US Open (1972) and Roland Garros (1973). Ilie Năstase is the first athlete in the world to sign a sponsorship contract with Nike, in 1972. The collaboration marked the beginning of the famous American brand’s sports marketing strategy
