DJ MĂ-TA didn’t set out to build a music career. It just happened. What started as a joke in her bedroom, turned into one of the most distinctive projects on the Romanian electronic scene: a sound that collides Balkan rhythms and manele with techno, drum and bass, and whatever else refuses to sit quietly in its lane.

Born in Bucharest, raised between there and London, where she spent years working in television production before deciding, almost overnight, that she’d rather be behind the decks, DJ MĂ-TA built her name without a label and without asking anyone’s permission. Just a pair of sunglasses, a laptop, and a refusal to make things sound “safe.”
She’s since played at Untold, Electric Castle, and Neversea, and in 2026 becomes one of only two Romanian artists on the lineup at Sziget Festival. Alongside her DJing and music, she’s built RUP, a collective dedicated to Balkan techno culture and to putting new talent, not just herself, in front of bigger stages.
She talks about what she pleases: gender inequality in the industry, why manele deserve more respect than they get, why AI will never replace a human being with something to say. It’s not comfortable, but it’s necessary. Especially now.
